  • Matt Easton – Grey Area (Review)

By Mason Strehl on December 10, 2013
For Matt Easton's sixth project, Grey Area, he steps in a different direction than most artists. While still holding key elements of hip hop, he chooses to go rock in the way of instrumentals. This is quite removed from the criterion of modern rap, but Matt Easton seemed to never give a fuck about the norm. He steps outside the boundaries and does his own thing. The thing about Easton is he knows how to make it work. Few rappers in our time have made rock instrumentals work with hip hop. Of course there are the greats; Jay-Z with '99 Problems', Nas with 'Hip Hop is Dead', and even older Run DMC 'Walk This Way', but as a general rule they don't work too well together. Matt Easton challenges that thought, easily mashing the two together in synergy. I'm honestly not sure how he does it, but even the most straight rock track on the project still has a feel of hip hop. In my opinion its pure sorcery. Most of the tracks on the album has rock instrumentals, but not all of them. For example, we have 'Jet Life', which is a more traditional Easton song. It's a bit slower, but still carries a lot of energy. In 'One', we still see rock elements, but it's masked a bit more by a sweet piano and string number - it's quite an epic piece. One you may recognize is 'She Will Not Fall' which is a beautiful acoustic piece about a seemingly wonderful woman, that was previously released on Word Of Mouth. We need to give credit where it's due though, this is a collaboration album, and all the rock instrumentals are done by a guy named Wes Powell. Matt Easton lets you know "If you hear shredding on the guitar, it's probably Wes" And there is a lot of insane guitar skills laid down. He does an incredible job backing Matt while he does his thing. With all that said, the whole album is incredible. The 13 tracks will keep you busy while you do whatever you do. There is a track for every activity on here and I'm confident that many of them will get on your various playlists. So do yourself a favor and download this now, right below, before you have to track down some guy at a party to ask what's playing and where you can get it. Be that guy. • Matt Easton – She Will Not Fall

By admin on November 12, 2013
Matt Easton continues to amaze me with his talent. He is an unique emcee who for the most part produces everything he raps over. On his last project, Word Of Mouth, he worked with Matt Persin and created an exceptional project. One of the more personal tracks on the project, She Will Not Fall, got a video yesterday which adds a new level to the already beautiful track. Check it out below. Its been a while since I have given my attention to the Chicago MC Matt Easton, and I’m regretting it. In my time looking the other way, Mr. Easton released a mixtape titled M.E. Musique (which I just listened to start to finish) and it is phenomenal. He has always had a knack for finding and mixing together the perfect samples [...]
